Rarely have I become so quickly infatuated with a record as I have with the new Crooked Fingers release. The story usually goes that I have to listen to an album quite a bit before sinks in and I can then truly enjoy it (I know my nerd-osity and utter obsessiveness is shining thru). But by the end of the first song on Bring on the Snakes, “The Rotting Strip”, I knew something was up. The way Eric Bachman, former brainchild of alterna - rock faves Archers of Loaf) writes a song is entrancing. The music throughout the disc is mainly acoustic guitar with light percussion and keyboards to create instantly memorable and interweaving melodies. This is all foundation for the amazing lyrics of the man know as Bachman. He not so much tells stories but gives you outlines of situations and expounds on the dilemmas brought up in them. There is a theme of redemption through dealing with problems running throughout the disc. Whether it be in the song “Sad Love”(bad title, good song), which illustrates being in love with someone/thing that is not healthy and having to move on, or in “Surrender Is Treason” the tail of one coming to terms with either being “what they want or be who they say” the lyrics are never obvious but give out ideas and observations, at the very least, on how we treat ourselves and each other. I like it, I luv it, I want some more of it. Yea.
